Be Ryong is Open and Holding Classes Safely

Master Yun teaching a Hapkido class

It’s the new year and many of us have health and wellness goals for 2021. If you’d like to be in the best shape of your life, come on down to Be Ryong and sign up to become a member.

Yes, Be Ryong is open! We’ve been open since July, when the Governor of VA allowed gyms to open up. We offer in person AND Zoom classes. Here are some of the safety protocols that Be Ryong uses to keep all students and instructors safe:

  • The mats and equipment are wiped down with disinfectant and bleach between classes
  • The studio undergoes a thorough deep cleaning at least once a week
  • All students must undergo a temperature check when they arrive
  • We limit the number of students who can be in any single class so that we can maintain social distancing
  • Masks are always worn
  • Parents are not allowed in the studio, only students, to limit the number of people in the studio

Because of our strict protocols, we have remained opened since the summer and our students are enjoying healthy and fun classes. Come join us!

Be Ryong to Begin Offering Online Classes Starting March 30

Since the Governor of VA has closed all gyms, Be Ryong remains physically closed. But Master Yun and the other instructors will begin online classes starting Monday, March 30.

Master Yun and the other instructors will use Zoom to lead students in a warmup, and then demonstrate the normal kicking, form and breaking techniques. The instructors will also ask the students to show their own forms and kicks so that the instructors can give them feedback.

On Monday, March 30, Master Yun and Trulyn will hold an all-belt class at 5pm. Be sure to watch out for your Zoom invitation. Thereafter, Be Ryong will hold online classes according to the schedule below. If you have questions, as always, you may call the studio at (703) 535-3334.

While this is not an ideal situation, we’re committed to you, our students. We know that the martial arts are important to you, and you and your families are probably going stir crazy. So let the whole family join the classes, get a good workout, and learn some martial arts in the process.

See you online! Be safe!

New Be Ryong After School Pickup Van

Be Ryong van

Master Yun recently purchased a new van for his after school program. In case you didn’t know, Master Yun will personally pick up students after school at any  Alexandria school, take them to the studio, and supervise homework and playtime until regular classes begin at 4:30pm.

Be Ryong has a quiet room at the back of the studio where students can do homework, read or just relax. Once homework is done, students may stretch, practice forms and kicking, or play games until classes begin.

After school students may take one or more classes at the studio. And if your child is a higher belt, the after care program is a great way for him/her to get extra one-on-one time with the instructors.

If you’re looking for an after care program for your child every day or just a few days a week, please come see Master Yun to inquire about schedules ad fees.

Come Run the Crystal City 5K on April 6 with Be Ryong

We include basic unarmed defense against a variety of attacks in the Be Ryong curriculum (especially HapKiDo), but let’s face it: if you have the chance to run, that’s your best option. Join us while we practice this valuable skill at the Crystal City 5K on Friday, April 6 at 6:00 PM. Register now!

This is the Friday in April during which taekwondo belt testing is going on at the dojang, so you won’t even miss a class!

Let Chris Murray know if you are registered and he’ll work out the group logistics. This is the 4th year that we’ve run this as a Be Ryong team. We typically gather before the run to warm up together. There are several of us doing this, and we run at a couple of different paces, from near light speed to very casual. You can run with one of us, or on your own. Afterwards, we’ll grab some pizza or something in Crystal City.

If you have any questions about logistics or even just want some advice about preparing for running in general, feel free to ask Chris or Laura Murray, our resident running enthusiasts.

We hope to see you there! Register now!

New Demo Team Schedule – Tuesdays at 6pm and Saturdays at 12:45pm

Master Yun has changed the schedule on Tuesdays. The 6pm TKD class has been replaced with practice time for the Be Ryong demo team, which will now practice on Tuesdays at 6pm and Saturdays at 12:30pm.

The Be Ryong demo team performs are local community events and at least one martial arts tournament every day. You don’t need to be a black belt to be part of the demo team. But you do need to come to class regularly, make a commitment to attend practice sessions, and work hard to learn the routines.

Interested in joining the demo team? Please see Master Yun.

Be Ryong Schedule Changing as of Monday, August 8

Students and families! Master Yun has updated the schedule and it goes into effect as of Monday, August 8. You can download a PDF (Beryong-Schedule) of the new schedule or visit the Schedule to check the schedule every day. The schedule on the website is mobile-friendly so feel free to check the schedule from your phone.

The schedule hasn’t changed a great deal, but it’s changed enough that everyone should check the schedule to make sure you are attending the proper class. Some things to note:

  • The Little Dragon class (4-6 year olds) has been moved to 4:00 – 4:30pm (previously 4:30 – 5:00pm)
  • Sparring will begin at Green Stripe (previously Orange belt)
  • The demo team practice has been moved to Saturday, 1:00 – 2:00pm
  • There is at least one class that every student can attend, often multiple classes.
  • Classes for teens and adults tend to be a harder workout, so parents, please talk to the younger kids about how these classes are little bit different.

What has not changed is:

  • Students should arrive 5-10 minutes ahead of time to stretch and be ready to start class on time.
  • Students should come to class ready to learn and try their best.

See you all on Monday!
